Brett Willsie Wins Player of the Week Honours
Ryan Watters
Despite only two games played over the weekend the BCFC had some outstanding
performances from all three facets of the game.
In the Battle of the Island, The Vancouver Island Raiders remain undefeated
after beating the Victoria Rebels 15-6. In a game in which yards were
difficult to come by, Raiders' running back Brett Willsie (left) carried the
load for the defending champions as he had 18 rushes for 151 yards, an
average of 8.4 yards a carry. Willsie's performance against a very good
defence wins him the Offensive Player of the Week. Willsie continues to
play very well following the injury to Andrew Harris four weeks ago.
In both games over the weekend, the defence would rule. However one player
stood out among the rest in a losing cause. Victoria Rebels' defensive back
RJ Cornish (below right) is the Defensive Player of the Week as he was a
force in the secondary with six solo tackles, three assists, two forced
fumbles, one fumble recovery and a batted ball. Cornish becomes the third
Rebel to win defensive player of the week this season.
The BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week is Okanagan Sun returner Matt
Scheurwater. (below left) The Calgary native was outstanding helping the
Sun to their fifth win of the season. Scheurwater would return five punts
for 86 yards, including a 67 yard return for a touchdown, his first of the
season. Scheurwater would also return two kickoffs for 81 yards, his
longest being 55 yards.
The BCFC will have a full slate of games this weekend including a battle for
first place in Nanaimo on Saturday afternoon. The 7-0 VI Raiders and
Offensive Player of the Week Brett Willsie will look to stay perfect as they
host the 6-1 South Surrey Rams and quarterback Cam Clark. The only Rams
loss this season was to the Raiders in week two (59-19), since then they
have won five straight. Also on Saturday night the 4-4 Victoria Rebels and
Defensive Player of the Week RJ Cornish will host the 1-7 Kamloops Broncos
and linebacker Tyler Lee. The Rebels have lost two straight since putting
up 84 points against the Trojans. The Broncos have lost four consecutive as
they look to avenge a 48-23 loss to the Rebels in week two. Saturday night
will also feature the 2-5 Chilliwack Huskers and quarterback Clayton Kroeker
in Burnaby in a battle with the 1-7 Vancouver Trojans and kicker Griffin
Bullock. Both teams are coming off a bye. Two weeks ago the Trojans won
their first game in two seasons and will look to make it two in a row.
